After a successful career in IT, Drew Wagar now writes full-time, crafting the kinds of stories that have been quietly assembling themselves in the back of his mind for decades — usually involving starships, ancient mysteries, impossible odds and characters who know their own minds.

His influences span the literary giants — Tolkien, Clarke, McCaffrey, Asimov, Atwood, Banks, Le Guin, and Herbert — and the screen legends of 70s and 80s sci-fi and fantasy: Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Ulysses 31, The Mysterious Cities of Gold, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and Star Fleet (X-Bomber), with later passions including Firefly, Farscape, Dark Matter, The Expanse, and Game of Thrones.

Drew is the author of the Shadeward Saga, a four-part fantasy-flavoured epic set against a backdrop of hard science fiction, and is currently expanding the same universe through a new series titled Hegira. He also penned the officially licensed novels for Elite: Dangerous and the cult classics Lords of Midnight and Doomdark’s Revenge.

Though he’s happy to discuss orbital dynamics or the ethics of AI, Drew’s primary aim as a writer is simple: to entertain. His stories are about adventure, discovery, survival, and the thrill of the unknown, told with sincerity, clarity, and the occasional bit of humour and romance. There’s no particular allegory, no not-so-subtle agenda — just escapism with emotional weight, strong characters and enough plot momentum to pull you along.

Drew is also passionate about encouraging new writers. He’s proof that you don’t need a degree in literature or a wall full of writing workshop certificates to succeed — just imagination, discipline, and the courage to start.
